While in Paris in 1787, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to John Adams' son-in-law and New York Representative, William Stephens Smith which included the famous quote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
The small flag on the front of the shirt is commonly known as the Pine Tree Flag and was flown in the American Revolution from Washington's Cruisers, which patrolled the Charles River in Massachusetts. The pine tree itself has much symbolism in ship building and owes itself to the White Pine found in New England.
